Massey-SPCA Desexing Clinic

We are a student operated & staffed Desexing clinic that offers a desexing + microchip services for cats in the Manawatu.

We operate every weekend out of the Massey Veterinary Schools teaching facilities, and provide an opportunity for veterinary students to gain hands on experience in a real clinic with real clients & patients. From patient admission right through to the spay & neuter surgeries themselves, our clinic is staffed by 1st-5th year Massey Vet students and overseen by an incredible team of teaching vets every step of the way.

As a student, the clinic provides you with an amazing opportunity to practice key competencies such as client communication skills, animal handling skills, physical exams, calculating & drawing up drugs, surgical preparation, anaesthesia & monitoring, and surgical skills. These skills are important day-one competencies and the supportive environment of the Desexing clinic is the perfect opportunity for you to master them.

How can I get involved?

As long as you are a current Veterinary student at Massey University, you are eligible to come through the desexing clinic in a clinical student role. Depending on what year group you are in will determine your role in the clinic, with each year group progressing through the different roles until you are eligible to be a Neuter surgeon in 3rd year, and a Spay surgeon in 4th and 5th year.

If you are interested in participating in the clinic, keep an eye out in your emails or the MUVSA Facebook page for the availability links to be posted. These are typically posted towards the beginning of each semester / half semester. These forms will allow you to indicate when you are available to be selected for the clinic. From here, students are selected on the Monday before each weekend clinic on a random basis and notified by email. Remember to fill out and update these availability forms to maximise your chance of selection.

There is also the opportunity to become a Student Leader of the Desexing clinic, which means that you take on the responsibility of running one clinic day per month. We are always on the lookout for students who will fit in to our team, please send us an email using the address below if you think this might be you.
